it develops into a warm friendship and sometimes not so much. "boston globe" political reporter matt viser is here. he was at the white house reporting on that lunch. and also presidential historian douglas brinkley, my pal, whose most recent book, great book, "cronkite." let me start with matt. and the reporting here. we knew this was coming. the president said he wanted to do it, and there is a tradition of burying the hatchet. what else got done? did that get done? did they bury the hatchet? >> it was a symbolic moment that seems mostly symbolic. there doesn't appear to be much substance that came out of the meeting. you had romney driving up in the black suv -- he didn't drive, he was in the passenger side, but all alone -- nobody to open the door for him. >> how democratic. >> nobody opened the door for him. the inauguration stage is being built in the background. >> no secret service. >> no secret service for romney. and, in fact, i think he had to provide his name and -- >> no. who made him do that? >> date of birth, social security. had to provide just like anybody else. >> aren't

in communities that remain without power. amtrak will offer limited service between new york city and boston today. the new york city subway system is slowly coming back to life. the m-train, which links queens to manhattan actually started running. manhattan remains in the dark. with little mass transit folks are turning to their cars and you know what that means. lots of gas lines. they extend for miles. according to the most recent report from triple-a, of the gas stations it monitors roughly 60% of stations in new jersey and 70% on long island were closed thursday. both of new jersey's senators are now asking president obama for emergency fuel supplies. we do have a presidential campaign to cover. we are in the last 72, 96 hours if you will. the final chapter of the 2012 campaign is now begun and it all comes down, it apparently changed to ohio which president obama and governor romney, ready for this, are going to visit six separate times in the last four days of the break. today is the first day. president obama spends the entire day in ohio. he's got stops in springfield, lima, hillia

if it's needed. i know the republican governor there is pressuring, there's pressure on boston, if it qualifies for a recount they would like the romney folks not ask for one. >> well, that's some real reporting. thank you very much, chuck todd, as always. joining me now, chris cillizza, msnbc political analyst. chris cillizza, what about the fiscal cliff and negotiations? what do you think the president is doing and planning and how engaged personally will he be in trying to avoid what obviously is a messy way to start a second term? >> well i think that chuck is right, there are still -- they are making sure that everyone on their team is kind of decided where they want to go. my guess would be, andrea, he's actually pretty engaged only because he's learned the lessons of his first term particularly on health care where it was sort of a well let's let congress work its will and we'll step in and get a bill together and get something done. obviously that process took a lot longer than the white house would have liked. it was significantly more contentious than the white house

, florida. there's boston, massachusetts. there's the san francisco bay area. there is seattle, up in washington state. there's san diego. there's tampa, florida in the st. petersburg area. there's baltimore, maryland. there's the virginia beach area, that metro area including norfolk. there is jacksonville, florida. and, of course, there is new orleans. so pop quiz. what do all of these large american cities have in common? you can cheat by looking at this map. what do all of these large american population centers have in common? the answer is that all of these major american cities are right on the edge of america. right on the coastal edge, up next to the sea. now, you could also add even some more major cities to this list if you wanted to. places like philadelphia or washington, d.c. or houston or providence, rhode island. those are all sort of coastal cities, too, in the sense that they are near the coast and they're on waterways. just for the sake of argument, let's not even include those. let's just be narrowly focused here, talking narrowly about big populous metropolitan

politics poll average has warren up by 4.5. politico is up there in boston covering the race. dave, thanks for joining us from politico. >> absolutely. >> let me ask you about that race. it seems like something happened a couple weeks ago. was it the mayor's endorsement and putting all the troops? but that's only 8% of the electorate. what got her on top of the race? >> i think it's women voters that were in brown's camp, still sort of flirting with him this summer in polls, moving towards warren, and i talked to some pollsters and voters on the ground today, and that's all you hear about on the airwaves, in the messaging. it's all designed to court women voters. some of them declaring themselves independents, although democrats have a big registration advantage up here 3 to 1, but i think if you look inside the polls, that's what's given warren the lead. brown still beats her among independents overall, but he's losing female voters. she has widened the gender gap. >> you're going to have a big turnout. not like january of 2010 when he won that first time. here are the closing ads from wa

final frenzy, that last bit of energy now that boston these candidates are giving it with just three days to go. let's go over the president's schedule. he started in ohio. they are in milwaukee at this point waiting for the president. he's airborne heading in that direction towards wisconsin. iowa and virginia. he end up in virginia and northern virginia tonight. i'll be out there accompanied by the dave matthews band. i'm looking forward to it. tomorrow sunday in new hampshire. florida. ohio. back to ohio and colorado. monday wisconsin, guess where, ohio after that. and then iowa before he finishes up in chicago where he will spend election eve. ohio we should mention nbc news and the marist organization yesterday put out their poll for ohio has the president up six. a whopping margin compared to what we've seen in the past. our poll even has the president up two in florida. so the obama team certainly optimistic and down the stretch they come to keep that sports metaphor going. >> love it. thank you. >> as for the challenger mitt romney needs to rally his troops and out gun the p

, politics and public policy. good afternoon to boston you. >> hi there. >> doug i'll start with you. we pay attention to the presidential candidates. generally speaking how much of an impact can something like a fight over judges, how much of an impact can something like this happen when it comes to voter turnout? >> kit have a huge impact especially on the local level and in this case on state level. what's at stake here are a couple of things. first of all to what degree will the supreme court remain independent from either political party. in florida, in the '70s they stopped voting for supreme court justice and they were being afrointd a nominating list that the governor then would appeal to in order to appoint the justices and then they stood for retention. the coke brothers another far right-wing group here have tar get these particular justices because they want to really impose willy-nilly their will upon florida. you know, they control the legislature, they control the governor's office now they want to control the supreme -- now t will be overloaded with people who can be appointe

manhattan, greenwich, where people have just accumulated -- boston, wherever, just remarkable wealth, vast sums of wealth. the land and gentry. and you sit there and go, you know what? these people that live in these mansions and have private jets and live an extraordinary life like few americans lived 30 years ago, they can probably deal with a 20% tax rate on capital gains instead of 15%. i don't think that's going to wreck the economy. and i think there are a lot of republicans that are saying what a few of us were saying after the election. bill kristol said it. so tell me again, why are we fighting and risking our majorities, protecting billionaires that are hedge fund guys who are paying 14% tax rates? >> walk two blocks from this street, fifth avenue between this building and 57th street, and the storefronts on fifth avenue. anybody who can go into those storefronts and purchase things in those storefronts are not going to be damaged by these tax reforms that we've been talking about. they're not going to be damaged. >> by the way, the storefronts aren't going to be damaged by raisi
